American Airlines announced Thursday that it will apply for routes from DFW International Airport to Tokyo Haneda Airport.

U.S. and Japan reached an agreement for expanded access at Tokyo Haneda Airport. Up to 12 slots were opened through the tentative agreement.

Routes included in the application are two daily flights from DFW to Haneda, and one each from Los Angeles International Airport and McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. Currently, the carrier operates one daily flight between Los Angeles and Haneda.

If approved by the Depart of Transportation, proposed routes will begin in the summer of 2020.

The relationship between Japan and North Texas was strengthened after Toyota Motor Corp. announced that it would move its North American headquarters from California to Plano.

After the announcement, other Japanese firms, such as Kubota Tractor Corp., relocated its U.S. headquarters to North Texas.
