2019 Landmark Classic will be held at the Heritage Yards in Plano on Saturday, September 21.
The Landmark Classic is a friendly exhibition game of softball between the Korean-American citizens and the Police officers from the Northwest Division of the Dallas Police Department.
It was started in 2011 by John Lee, who is the founder and CEO of Landmark Realty Group in Dallas. With the success of the first event, the Landmark Classic was transformed into an annual event, with Landmark Realty Group and Greater Dallas Korean American Chamber of Commerce (GDKACC) sponsoring the event each year.
Around 2011, the Korea Town in the Royal Lane-Harry Hines Boulevard area was experiencing a surge in crime against businesses and individuals.
With the limited man power of the DPD, there was a consensus among the Police and the Korean-American community that the best way to fight crimes in the area was through cooperation between the Police department and the community members.
The Landmark Classic, along with the GDKACC’s Scholarship Luncheon for DPD, has been serving as the means to open the communication channels and strengthen the relationship between the two communities.
This year will be the 8th year in which DPD officers and Korean-American community members get together to enjoy a friendly game of softball and luncheon.
This year’s Landmark Classic will be played in conjunction with the Mid-South Korean American Softball Tournament, which is an annual softball tournament for amateur Korean-American teams from the Mid-South region of the United States.
DPD will have two teams – exhibition team for the Landmark Classic and the competitive team for the Mid-South Tournament. Landmark Realty will also be sponsoring the DPD’s competitive team.
The Landmark Classic will be played in Plano, instead of Dallas, for a couple of reasons.
First, it’s hard to find a playable softball field in Dallas with relatively easy access for Korean-Americans so they can come out watch the game.
Secondly, the Mid-South Tournament had already been scheduled to be held at the Heritage Yards in Plano. So, Plano venue was the logical choice for the Landmark Classic.
The Mid-South Tournament, in which a total of 8 teams are competing, will start at 9:00AM. The Landmark Classic will be played at 11:00AM. Following this game, there will be lunch, sponsored by bbbop Seoul Kitchen, for all participants of the tournament to enjoy. This would be the best time for spectators to interact with the Police officers and show support for them.
Officer David Kim (Sr. Corporal) and Tom Clayton of DPD visited Landmark Realty Group’s office Friday, September 13th for press conference with local Korean-American media.
“We always look forward to playing softball with Korean-American community. It doesn’t matter who wins. It’s always a great way to interact with the citizens and open up communication channels” Officer Tom Clayton said.
Officer David Kim, who is Korean-American, echoed Officer Clayton’s comment and thanked Landmark Realty and GDKCC for their continued support for DPD.
“The fact that DPD officers want to play with us is a real treat for us. I just hope that the Korean-American citizens can come out to the game and show their support for the Police officers” John Lee said.
